It is important to understand what discipline for kids really is all about. Discipline is not a way of punishing your kids. Parents who learn how to discipline kids effectively help them grow into adults who are accountable for their actions and are well respected.
How to discipline kids: here are some tips to get you started.
Start when your kids are babies
It is preferable to start child discipline as early as possible. Parents tend to wait too long before starting discipline. When you start disciplining a children when they are still babies they learn good behavior habits. You know when to start disciplining when you see your baby looking to see your reaction when they deliberately throw or drop a toy. The parent's reaction to an event like this starts to teach a baby what behavior brings positive or negative attention.
So when you see this type of behavior happening with your baby speak to your baby firmly "No no" and shake your head. Repeat this response everytime the baby does this unacceptable action. If the baby's inappropriate behavior does not earn the usual smiles and approval from the parent, then that behavior is discouraged. If however, a parent gives the baby positive attention to such an action it will encourage the baby to repeat the action to get the parents attention .
Discipline Kids Using Consequences.
Consequences should be given when kids do not do as they are told, or ignore previously given boundaries or rules. Children need to understand before they make the choice to ignore previously set rules and boundaries, what the consequences wil be. When following through with consequences, parents need to be sure the child understands why the consequence is being implemented. Consequences need to be given calmly and firmly, explaining clearly why the consequence is being given.
Try not to raise your voice when disciplining children. When parents frequently raise their voice when addressing child behavior problems, kids quickly learn to either ignore the parent or increase their decibels.
Training with Choices
As soon as your kids are old enough to understand you and able to do what you ask start training them with the use of choices. When a parent gives choices child learns to have more control over the life and can start to develop self-discipline. For example if your kid has a chore to do and wants to watch their favorite TV program a parent could suggest that by doing their chore straightaway they would then be able to watch the TV program. By choosing to get the chore done kids chooses to be able to watch the TV program.
An important aspect to remember in disciplining your kids is to be consistent what ever your current or consequence is it is important to be consistent in implementing your discipline strategies. Whatever your child discipline strategy is, it needs to be fair and consistent and be recognized as such by each one of your children in the family. This is important for parents if they want to earn the respect from their children.
When developing your plan of action on how to disciplining kids, whatever method you are using, see it as training and teaching not punishment . The bottom line is that when dealing with
child behavior problems, your discipline strategy should always be approached in love and done for the best interests of the child.
